Memorial Match for founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew

On 28 March 2015, ARFC was supposed to play a special Memorial Match as a tribute for our founding father Mr Lee Kuan Yew at The Float@Marina Bay. Due to the huge crowd, however, the police force required the venue.

Thankfully, ARFC managed to find a replacement venue at the SIA Sports Club from 4 to 7 pm.

Prior to the match, all players (with the exception of Toh, Haron and Hee as they were late) drew a deck of poker cards to determine which team they would be in.

The white team is (in order of draw):

1.   Ismail
2.   Tjioe
3.   Kenny
4.   Robin
5.   Khim
6.   Tong
7.   Daniel
8.   David
9.   Huiming
10.                 Chun Haw
11.                 Kiat
12.                 Jasper
13.                 Blackburn
14.                 Haron
15.                 Toh
16.                 Hee

The black team is (in order of draw):

1.   Derrick
2.   Darren
3.   Jinzhong
4.   Guoxiong
5.   Eng Lai
6.   Dominic
7.   Soon
8.   Alvin
9.   Sebastian
10.                 Elvis
11.                 Ron
12.                 How Meng
13.                 Weilit
14.                 Wayne
15.                 Tze Ern

Both teams and their family members took a group photo with the tribute banner to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Prior to the kick-off, all players and family members also observed a minute of silence.

The BLACK team drew first blood when Alvin put Tze Ern through on the left flank. Tze Ern’s cross was met by Soon whose header struck the cross-bar. Wayne reacted quickest to the rebound by simply slotting home. 1-0

The WHITE team soon fought back. Khim’s reverse pass foled the BLACK’s defence and Kenny capitalized by turning and firing home a rocket. 1-1

The BLACK team then earned a contentious penalty after Guoxiong was upended by Ismail though Guoxiong appeared to have no chance of keeping the ball which was headed out anyway. Derrick stood up but his penalty was disallowed by the referee as Derrick had broken his run-up momentum. In the re-take, Alvin easily dispatched the penalty. 2-1

The WHITE team then grabbed its 2nd equalizer from Robin. From a goal-mouth melee, Robin turned back the clock to show his predatory instinct by squeezing the ball home. 2-2

The BLACK team regained its lead from yet another lucky decision from the referee. From a high ball, the ball struck Huiming’s hand and the referee awarded a penalty though the handball was totally unintentional. Sebastian stepped up and sent Ismail the wrong way. 3-2

The BLACK team then appeared to have the result to bed with a 4th goal. How Meng exchanged wall-passes with Sebastian before crossing to Tze Ern who made no mistake from close-range. 4-2

In the 2nd half, the WHITE team gained some hope when Hee beat Derrick at his near post with a rising shot. 4-3

The WHITE team then equalized for the 3rd time in the match when Haron took full advantage of a defensive error to place the ball home.   4-4

Both teams then conjured to miss some glit-edged chances. With both teams tiring, chances and errors were really aplenty.

In the penalty shoot-out, Hee (WHITE) was the first to step up and scored. 1-0

Sebastian (BLACK) ensured parity when he beat Ismail for the 2nd time from the spot though Ismail got a hand to it. 1-1

Chun Haw (WHITE) then scored. 2-1

Elvis (BLACK) was then denied by a superb full body-length flying save from Ismail. 2-1

Kenny (WHITE), who was probably the best-performing player in their team, then saw his spot-kick saved by Derrick. 2-1

Alvin (BLACK) then lifted his penalty to the top right-hand corner. 2-2

Robin (WHITE) followed Kenny’s fate when his kick was pushed out by Derrick. 2-2

Derrick (BLACK) then slotted past Ismail 3-2

Blackburn (WHITE) then showed Kenny and Robin how it is done when he sent Derrick the wrong way with a “ai zai ai zai” kick. 3-3

It was then left to Darren (BLACK) to snatch victory with a decisive kick. 4-3

Change in venue and time for Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) Memorial Match

Due to the unprecedented, unanticipated and unwavering crowd that turned up, and continue to turn up, to pay their respects to our founding father at Parliament House, the police decided to use The Float@Marina Bay as holding area for the crowd. Hence, ARFC's planned LKY Memorial Match will not be taking place on 28 March 2015 (Sat) from 6 to 9 pm.

No way past Ron in 2-0 win

Playing a 9 am match for the first time since god-knows-when, ARFC came up against a hard-tackling but fair AKFC to emerge 2-0 victors.

Surprisingly, the turn-out was superb as 18 warriors appeared. It could have been more but Tze Ern’s son fell sick and pulled out at the 11th hour; while Elvis was still laid sprawling outside Mask69 at Joo Chiat Road with an unknown female Vietnamese.

The match was even-stevens in the opening exchanges though ARFC began to dominate.

First, Tjioe and Jinzhong both glanced their headers slightly wide from Alvin’s corners.  Then, Alvin put his shot well wide after picking up from a defensive error and with their keeper fully exposed.
In the 20th min, Haron, who sacrificed himself for a place at the bench, replaced Soon with Sebastian, while Weilit came on for Hee.

With his first touch of the match, Sebastian scored. Kenny was fouled about 37 metres away and Sebastian pleaded for Kenny to allow him to take the free-kick. Sebastian drove a fierce free-kick right through the wall which saw the ball took a wicked deflection to wrong-foot their keeper. 1-0 and this was Sebastian’s 96th ARFC goal.

Chun Haw then came on for Tjioe and immediately played with fire in his belly by covering so much space and challenging for balls.

Jinzhong then glanced wide from Sebastian’s free-kick.

How Meng, Blackburn and Derrick also came on.

Chun Haw then displayed the ‘Fernando Redondo’ moment at the left touch-line. Trapped at near the corner flag, Chun Haw’s back-heel fooled their 2 players. Weilit picked up the ball and played to Kenny who then laid on for the on-rushing Sebastian ala Paul Scholes. However, Sebastian’s side-footed shot was blocked by their defender for a corner.

[For those with short memory – Fernando Redondo fooled about 3 Man United players in a superb piece of back-heel skill in Real Madrid’s champions league match in season 2001, I think. Go google!]

From the corner, ARFC nearly scored as the ball was like in a pin-ball machine. However, Kenny, Jinzhong and Toh just could not get a clean shot in. Unlucky!

7 mins into the 2nd half, ARFC doubled its lead. From a quick counter-attack, the ball was parried by their keeper. Both Alvin and Chun Haw came charging in like raging bulls and luckily, Alvin heard Chun Haw’s call and let him in. Chun Haw then thrashed in a low left foot shot for his 30th ARFC goal. 2-0

By now, ARFC was in total control and created chances after chances.

Ismail then produced a great save when he tipped the ball over the bar.

Alvin then had everybody in total disbelief. After stealing the ball away from their keeper, Alvin had at least 7 seconds with the gaping goal. Inexplicably, Alvin managed to somehow carass the ball against the post!

Guoxiong chipped in a deliciously-looking high through ball and Alvin nicked the ball away from their keeper. His square ball was converted by Kenny who came running in from a deep but the referee incorrectly ruled out for offside!

Thereafter, Soon, Kenny, Guoxiong all had their venomous shots blocked!

All in all, I think ARFC created close to 20 chances.

Credit to the defence once again as all defenders, well marshaled by Ron who had a monster of a match, had a great match.

Voting results:

Ron – 14
How Meng – 11
Darren – 8
Toh – 4
Kenny – 4
Guoxiong – 3
Tjioe – 2
Soon – 2
Blackburn – 1

In searing heat, ARFC started off the game rather slowly against a bunch of youths who are mostly half their age. However, it took ARFC about 27 mins before they could muster a decent shot at opponent's goal.

Alvin open the floodgate though in the 37th min. With the opponent still distracted by Toh's shout for a foul, Derrick took a quick goalkick that saw Alvin rushing to the opponent's goal from the left. With only the keeper to beat, Alvin managed to round him n slid the ball into the empty net for his 251st ARFC goal. 1-0

3mins later another goal was scored from a moment of individual brilliance. After several exchange of passes among ARFC players, the ball bounced at the 30-metres mark where Azman took a shot that swerved to the top right corner as the keeper remain rooted to his spot. 2-0

Yet another 3 minutes later, ARFC increased its lead. From a Blackburn corner, Toh leaped the highest and headed the ball towards goal which the keeper could only parry it in. 3-0 and this was Toh’s 80th ARFC goal.

In the dying stages of the first half, the opponent nearly scored from a set-piece but their striker could only hit the ball against the post with only the keeper to beat.

HT: 3-0.

In the second half, ARFC made several changes to its line-up and Michael was also given a run-out in the squad.

7 mins after the restart, Toh showed everyone his aerial prowess once again when he leaped majestically to head home from yet another Blackburn corner for his 81st ARFC goal. 4-0

In the 57th min, ARFC scored its fifth goal off a beautiful team play. Playing at left back, Soon moved the ball upwards where he passed to Weilit on the left flank. Weilit then pushed the ball to Michael who in turn laid it for Soon who was striding his way into the opponents box. With a defender close on his heels and fast tiring due to his run earlier in the day, Soon showed his class when he simply placed the ball to the bottom right corner, out of the keeper's despairing dive. 5-0 and this was Soon’s 68th ARFC goal.

In the 67th min, ARFC scored yet again. From a series of slick movement n touches between Blackburn, Azman, and Alvin, Apex broke into the opponent's goal where it eventually dropped for Azman to weave into the box and slot the ball home. 6-0

With the commanding lead, complacency started creeping in and ARFC allowed 2 goals to be scored by the opponent, courtesy of How Meng's valiant effort despite playing as centre back for most of the match. 6-2.

Alvin ensured the 5-goal difference was restored when he smashed the ball home in the 77th min for his second goal of the game and his 252nd ARFC goal.  7-2

Michael also got on the scoresheet 3 minutes later when he bamboozled his way into the box and shot straight at the keeper who could only parry it in. 8-2. And this was Michael's first goal in 10years after a long hiatus from the sport.

The opponent scored in the final minutes of the game from a free kick just outside the box which Chun Haw drove home low into the far corner of the net. 8-3
