ARFC fell to contentious referee decision

On a hot and humid day, ARFC took the lead but fell 1-2 to Schwarstarz FC thanks to a controversial decision by the inept referee.

ARFC was boosted by the last-min presence of Khim, Ron, Norman and the returning prodigal son Hock. Special mention to Wayne also for coming despite arriving in Singapore only on Sunday morning, and to Guoxiong for “sacrificing” his JB trip with his wife.

ARFC started with this line-up:

Keeper: Dependable Jinzhong
Right-back: Marauding Guoxiong
Sweeper: Unpredictable Blackburn
Stopper: Combative Ron
Left-back: Unbeatable Darren
Right-mid: Talisman Derrick
Centre-mid: Dynamic Soon
Centre-mid:  Isaac (guest player)
Left-mid: Sublime Khim
Striker: Powerful Alvin (captain)
Striker: Wonder Wayne

Subs:

ARFC Scoring Legend Haron
Long-throw specialist Norman
Seh Meng
Mean-machine Hock (late)

Absent:

Speedy Hee
Hard-man Tjioe
Towering Toh
Astute-reading sweeper Elvis

In the opening 15 mins, chances were at a premium as both teams were sizing each other up.
ARFC fashioned the first chances after a great move down the left by Khim and Alvin. The ball found its way to Derrick on the right and his crisp low shot was parried by their brilliant keeper. Derrick latched onto the rebound but again their keeper thwarted his low shot.

Later on, Derrick and the very-impressive Isaac were constantly chopped down by their players but the poor referee did not even give verbal warning which encouraged their players to commit more fouls.

Norman and Seh Meng then came on for Derrick and Darren who graciously made way.  Later on, Haron replaced Wayne.

Guoxiong then came to ARFC’s rescue when he made a crucial interception in the box.

The half-time score is 0-0.

Hock came on and almost immediately put ARFC ahead. Khim’s sublime reverse ball was dummied by Haron and Hcok then powered into the penalty box. Unfortunately, his rustiness from almost 2 years out of football showed when he took an additional touch and when closed down by their keeper, Hock lifted the ball just over the cross-bar. Unlucky!

ARFC finally took the lead courtesy of yet another ball from Khim. The ball was reflected and Alvin then headed the ball goalwards and over their keeper. Incredibly, their keeper produced an arch-back save ala Gordon Banks against Pele in World Cup 1970, and clawed the ball out. However, the ball dropped just 0.77 mm away from the goal-line and Alvin had the simplest of chance of simply nodding the ball home in a slow-motion manner for his 170th ARFC goals.  1-0

ARFC then conceded a goal.1-1

The turning point came in the 77th min mark. Darren looked to be fouled at the right-back position and everyone saw that the referee had pointed the ball in ARFC’s favour and Darren and the rest were looking away.  Incredulously, the referee reversed his decision and from a quick throw-in and shot, the ball struck Darren’s out-stretched hand and a penalty was awarded and duly converted. 1-2

Soon had a chance to equalize when he was put through but his low shot was again smothered by their brilliant keeper. The referee also failed to see that Soon could have been fouled by a late sliding tackle.
Haron glanced a few headers wide and Blackburn repeatedly fired his free-kicks over the bar even though we can all see that such free-kicks would not be able to beat their brilliant keeper.

Credit, however, should not be taken away from our opponent as they played well too and is a sporting team.

Man-of-the-Match is jointly given to Khim and Soon (Isaac also came close) for their commanding display in midfield.

This match also once again re-confirmed to all that Khim is the best ARFC player that the team ever has.

ARFC in come-from-behind win

On 15 Apr 2012, ARFC came from behind to dismiss the tough challenge of a tough team 2-1.

ARFC was missing ARFC’s best player, Khim as well as the still-injured Sebastian.

ARFC started with this line-up:
Keeper: Dependable Jinzhong
Right-back: Marauding Guoxiong
Sweeper: Astute-reading sweeper Elvis
Stopper: Towering Toh
Left-back: Unbeatable Darren
Right-mid: Talisman Derrick
Centre-mid: Dynamic Soon
Centre-mid: Hard-man Tjioe
Left-mid: Speedy Hee
Striker: Powerful Alvin
Striker: Unpredictable Blackburn

Subs:
ARFC Scoring Legend Haron
Combative Ron
Steely Tze Ern
Wonder Wayne

Absent:
Influential Sebastian
Talented Chun Haw
Sublime Khim
Long-throw specialist Norman
Precocious En Dian
Nippy Kenny

ARFC pressed all the way but was unable to conjure any clear scoring chances. In a bid to freshen things up, Wayne, Tze Ern, Ron and Haron took over Darren, Derrick, Tjioe and Alvin respectively. However, the changes did not bring about any goal in the first half.

To make things worse, ARFC conceded a goal to trail 0-1 at half-time.

ARFC leveled things up soon after the re-start. A superb through-ball from the irrepressible Soon saw Derrick breaking clear and faced their keeper alone. Derrick then coolly slotted the ball past the keeper for his 53rd ARFC goal. 1-1

ARFC finally took the lead after Blackburn turned back the years by springing their off-side trap, rounded their keeper and rolled the ball home for his 109th ARFC goal. 2-1

Just before the final whistle, Tjioe also turned back the years when he powered his way down the right flank, cut back and sent in a delicious cross. Alvin connected powerfully but the ball just flew 0.77 mm above the cross-bar. Unlucky and with the miss, Alvin snapped his 5-match goal-scoring streak and remained at 169 goals for ARFC, still 7 short of Haron’s all-time record of 176 goals.

Man-of-the-Match is jointly given to Tjioe and Soon for their colossal display in midfield.

ARFC in "bizarre wins" on same match day/time

For the first time in its illustrious history, ARFC played 2 opponents on the same day and time after the organizer cocked up in the organizing. As such, ARFC played a 30-min half against each opponent.

In the first match, ARFC started with this line-up:

Keeper: Dependable Jinzhong
Right-back: Marauding Guoxiong (captain)
Sweeper: Astute-reading sweeper Elvis
Stopper: Towering Toh
Left-back: Combative Ron
Right-mid: Talisman Derrick
Centre-mid: Influential Sebastian
Centre-mid: Hard-man Tjioe
Left-mid: Unbeatable Darren
Striker: Powerful Alvin
Striker: Unpredictable Blackburn

Subs:
Alex, Jasper and Weili (all guest players)

Absent:
ARFC Scoring Legend Haron
Talented Chun Haw
Dynamic Soon
Sublime Khim
Long-throw specialist Norman
Precocious En Dian
Nippy Kenny
Speedy Hee
Wonder Wayne
Steely Tze Ern
Seh Meng

ARFC nearly took the lead when Sebastian’s long floated ball from the right sailed over their keeper and almost ended up in the net.

This proved to be his last involvement as he was subjected to a crude and cruel two-footed tackle from the opponent. Medical tests done later confirmed that he would be out for at least a month.

Alex came in for Sebastian.

ARFC took the lead almost at the end of the half when Alvin chased down a long punt and after a defensive error from their sweeper, Alvin’s perseverance paid dividends when he picked up the loose ball and sent the ball past their bewildered keeper for his 168th ARFC goal. 1-0 and his goal had his watching wife, Irene, performed the Mexican waves 7 times alone.

In the “second match”, Jasper came in at left back with Ron moving up to centre mid and Tjioe asked to be rested after putting in a sterling shift. Jasper impressed by coming up with several crucial interceptions and blocks.

ARFC scored after yet another memorizing move from Derrick who is probably the most improved player in recent months. He worked his way from right wing and drifted inwards and into the penalty box. Pulling a defender to him, Derrick squared the ball across to the unmarked Alvin on the left who coolly picked his spot for his 169th ARFC goal!

This match is most noted for the superb wing play by Darren and Derrick, as well as Guoxiong’s superb over-lapping runs which we have not seen for some time. Also, Tjioe imposed his authority on the match and was totally dominant. The defence of Elvis, Toh, Ron, Jasper were also in total control, while Blackburn showed intelligence upfront and Alvin was very hardworking in closing down their defenders. Jinzhong’s long kicks were also very accurate.

ARFC succumbed to younger and fitter opponents

On 25 Mar 2012, ARFC faced a young team and eventually succumbed to a 2-4 defeat due to fatigue.

ARFC took the lead when Alvin burst down the left touch-line and squared to the on-rushing Tjioe. With a deft first-touch to kill the ball, Tjioe duly slammed the ball home for his 58th ARFC goal. 1-0 and this was also Tjioe’s first goal in 2012!

ARFC then conceded 2 goals to go down 1-2 at half-time.

In the second half, stand-in keeper Ron produced a brilliant penalty save to keep the score down. However, the faster and fitter opponents then netted 2 more goals to lead 4-1.

ARFC pulled a goal back when Derrick again displayed his wizardry skills and was brought down in the box. Alvin stood up and although his kick was saved, he was fastest to react and rammed the ball to almost burst the net for his 167th ARFC goal. 2-4
